Hi there,

tha lazy designer is back in the game, hopefully. So far i haven’t been sticking to the schedule very good. Doing well for a few weeks and the first chunk of work blow me out of the race. This was something i expected prior to getting into this but that it would happen so fast! So i will try to get back into it.

Not all is lost and i can do more than one design a day as i make rules if i want there to be rules for this. As mentioned weeks ago work comes first and this needs to be fun otherwise i wont stick in here.

We already started a new month so i wanted to start on the website as i can’t look at it anymore. I began by making some icons as i love doing these. I figured out a really nice style doing them by using AO in c4d and getting this very popular stencil cutout style that was floating around the web lately. Don’t know if this trend is dead already but maybe somebody might still like them.

This is a shot of them, i actually made some more but i don’t like them and will probably not use them.

as you might have noticed i stopped posting daily last week due to some workload i had to finish.
Right now i’m catching up on last weeks stuff with some logo designs i had to do. Some stuff needs to be sorted out but i think i can get back to this by monday night.

very very late, i know. I had some stuff on my desk as well as my mind that needed my attention. But i will make up for that. All is sorted out now and i can continue to put up daily365 posts. Got a free sunday for the challenge ahead.

For the missing day 20 i decided to pick my own font that i used here before. Used AE for this one which i’m trying to lear at the moment and thanks to some very generous people out there i made some progress on this field. The timing is off as i don’t fully know my way round in this program. I tested Videocopilots Sure Target for this one. Made some nice moves out of my choppy keyframing. Will get back to this some time. This is a very cool tool you can download from there.

Hi there,

is it time already to start working on day 19? Time is flying. I read a wonderfull tweet this morning with some inspirational design in it. Thanks a lot for this, Eva. So many nice examples of typo-art pieces. So. I decided to try to animate something similar. All about the eyes.

Put up a small teaser image for you to look at as animating this might take some time. I’m not taking the most elegant approach to this but it’s a save way doing it. Made some tests earlier that where flickering and dancing all over the screen but i found a way to do it anyway. Problem solving can be so satisfying

Hi there

The lazy designer get’s bitten by the brown fox and the lazy dog. Better run faster next time. I still need to finish day 17 for posting but i rendering the clip for today which is day 18.
Did some typo surfing today inspired by the smashingmagazine post from earlier and found some cool new additions to my ever growing type collection.

Todays font is one from that post or one site i found be surfing the links.
Exus Pilot by mauroh. I liked it for the huge faces inside the outline. This is one font i will definitly come back to later as i really like how it’s designed. There is an outline and a fill version inside. I’m not sure if this kind of a trend with display font these days but i see a lot of similar designed typefaces.

I got a rough idea what i want to do for sunday. It’s still winter over here and i want to do something visually silent for this post. Didn’t work out the way i wanted it to be. I need to rerender this with some nicer camera angles and need to rework the depth of field settings. Still need to learn to use this more often in projects.
I do have some customer work now but i will post day 17 and 18 later tonight. Now it’s time to work.

Update::
Actually did no18 first as the idea needed to be tested. I’m rerendering the no17 video now but as i seems now this will take all night. I picked one of the already finished frames and made the preview image for now. This looks like the longest #daily365 till today.

After a long night on post #15 i decided to do something simpler today. Trying myself on the wonderfull CSTools again after having the files sit on my HDD for month. I used some before but missed the update and example files that are in the CSTools download.
I’m simply using a particle demo file with some text for today post. Some flicker lighting and the hand camera tool for some good fun. So far i really like what new possibilities i have by using these xpresso tools. A lot of fun animating with them. I still need to learn a lot more about the CSTools file package. If you like to learn a little too drop by the greyscalegorilla blog and whatch Nick explain some of them on video.

The font i used today is Chaos Math by Finlay Paterson which can be downloaded from dafont.com.

Ok. So i played with a lot o different stuff the last two weeks. Now it hink it’s time to start a new week with a theme. This will help me channel inspiration better. I can do some research when there is time and put together a folder with links and images and stuff for coming back to it later. Also doing some doodles in my sketchbook.

W3Theme will be 3D type in motion. I know i have done some pieces of this kind before in the last weeks and stressed the fact that i need to learn to animate a lot better so let’s start here. I do have a love for type. I like motion graphics and i have been doing 3d type graffitti stuff for some time (but not in the last two years).

So this will be week three – styles and technique

When i start a week i think first i’ll post some links to inspiring stuff.

Update for day 015
Uploaded a video to Vimeo with the first font in motion. I decided to go with Jos Buivengas Museo Slab as i needed some fresh font i haven’t used a lot so far in any design work i do. Just for getting a feel for it. So far i Like it very much. You can download it at Myfonts for free or buy the whole font family if you like it as much as i do.

Video is finally online, Vimeo plays nice again.

So after a long day in the studio and some hours thinking about some ideas to follow for todays d365 i decided to stick with something i planned for a while now. Doing a twitter background and trying to keep the bg image here on the blog in kind off the same style. First i need kind of a logo or graphic. So here we go.

Ok back in the ring. This piece for today i kind of describing my trouble finding an idea for todays post. It’s made from an old photo i took in a capetown township 4 years ago. Combined with a texture and some really crapy type forced into place.
Preview looks more interesting than the actual image. Hmm. Note to self – make a plan next time.

Todays post is from a little side project i’m working on with a friend. Can’t call this work so it will be my post for day 12. I like to keep this blog strictly a fun thing to do so i wont post stuff here i do for the studio. Maybe someday i’ll mix a little thing in but untill then only off-studio-time work.

This is a preview image from the font i made for his logo. We wanted something super serif western inspired because it fits the theme for the website we’re building.

Update::

I made a quick render of the full letterset. Right now we only need the letters for the website so there is now vector or font version of it. I’m thinking about doing one though.

Hi there,

this is only a small preview of what i’m going to post today. There is still some rendering to do but the pipeline is full right now with some renderjobs and #daily365 is just a fun side project. Work does come first.

I made another 3d sculpt today. Somekind of an alien monkey thing. Maybe i’ll try some color on it later. So far just a small preview AO render.

Right. It’s 4:13 am right now. Have been working late and having some trouble sleeping as my head is still spinning with ideas for some projects. Night time is perfect worktime. I’m way more productive during the night and a lot of people i know are too. Would be very much interested in an explanation for that.
Don’t know what idea i’m trying my hands on for today. I can return to one of the prjects from last week or start something new. So we’ll see.

Update::

So i decided to return to one of the previous projects. Had some time to do more shiny icons. I did rework some of the icons i posted before. Still not happy with some but i think this is a normal process with my work. There is always a bit that i like in there. So no further talking. Some images for you.

… 3d model today but got called into a lot of work. I made my basemesh and did some retopo work on it, but so far got nothing to show. I got to leave in a few minutes for another job appointment, so i can’t continue working on it now. I will however work on it tonight when i’m back, so you will see something later to comment on.

EDIT UPDATE

So i’m officially behind on my design daily work. For me right now work needs to be a top priority as 2009 was a rotten year in terms of getting my company forward. I had to do some customer work first.

Back to the daily design. It started out inspired by a video game i played the last weeks. I think some might have heard of “borderlands”. There are these Skagg creatures in the game. Kind of an alien dog creature. I like the design so i decided to do something similar but a bit more dog like. I think i will make this a double day post as i need some more time to do something worthy.

Call this a WIP ’till i decide otherwise.
